What fabric weight and stretch should custom cargo pants have?
Custom cargo pants should be built at 300–380 GSM cotton twill, with 340 GSM and above preventing the pocket sag that lighter cargo develops. Stretch runs 0–4%, and on cargo specifically the percentage is lower than on casual pants — because elastic cloth and loaded cargo pockets work against each other.
Why cargo needs more weight than casual pants. Cargo pants are judged by what happens when the pockets are loaded. A 280 GSM twill that looks correct on a flat sample sags at the cargo pocket once worn, while the same pattern in 380 GSM twill holds its line. That is why fabric weight is locked before fit approval on this category, rather than confirmed afterwards. Casual pants at 220–280 GSM are cut for drape; cargo at 300–380 GSM is cut to carry load.
The fabric routes.
- Cotton twill at 300–380 GSM. The standard route and the recommended band. Structured enough to support pockets without interlining.
- Heavier twill. More structure and pocket support, with a stiffer break-in and a more workwear read.
- 12 oz canvas. The most rugged option, for programs positioned as genuine workwear rather than utility fashion.
- Ripstop. Tear resistance at a lighter weight, which suits technical and utility positioning where a heavy twill would feel wrong.
- Stretch twill at 220–280 GSM. The comfort-driven route. At this weight the pockets need bracing rather than relying on the cloth, because the fabric is doing less of the structural work.
How stretch interacts with cargo pockets. Elastane gives comfort but lets the fabric move under load, which is exactly what makes a bellows pocket lose its shape. Keeping stretch between 0% and 2% on a loaded-pocket design preserves the supported line; going to 4% on a cargo pant usually trades structure for comfort in a way the customer notices at the pocket, not at the waist. Stretch also changes pattern allowances, so it is locked before grading.
Season and weight. 300–340 GSM suits a three-season pant that layers over a tee or under outerwear. 340–380 GSM suits a cold-season or workwear build where the weight itself is part of the value proposition. A single cargo SKU sold year-round is usually set in the middle of the band.
The construction that has to match the weight. Elastic or drawcord waistbands with tuned tension; zip flies on YKK or equivalent zippers or button flies with metal shanks; belt loops specified by width and spacing, since they carry most of the load when the pockets are full; bartacks and reinforcement tape at stress points; and a crotch gusset on heavy-duty programs. Pocket flaps are cut from the same weight as the body and bar-tacked at the corners, because flaps are where cargo pants fail first.
Indicative FOB pricing is $8–30+ per unit, with fabric weight, wash and hardware count driving the number. Sampling runs 7–10 days and bulk production 30–45 days after pre-production approval, plus 20–30 days by sea to the US or Europe. The minimum order is 100 pieces per color per style.
